According to EU directives, in a virtuous system, any waste leftover from separate waste collection must be sent to waste-to-energy plants in order to harness its energy and to avoid landfill. The waste-to-energy plant is therefore complementary to separate waste collection.
Good separate collection is the fundamental prerequisite for ensuring an effective and fully sustainable waste management system from an environmental point of view. The commitment of each citizen to correctly differentiate waste in the appropriate containers – or to deliver it to the collection centers in the area – allows add value also to the waste remains after separate collection through waste to energy plants.
The Turin waste-to-energy plant can treat municipal solid waste from separate collection and special waste similar to municipal solid waste.
The plant recovers energy contained in waste, producing electricity and,in the near future, thermal energy for district heating.
